Impressive yields illustrated in maps

January 20, 2022

Across much of Ontario, many corn and soybean farmers enrolled in Production Insurance saw strong yields in 2021.

Based on corn and soybean yields reported to Agricorp by Production Insurance participants by January 10, 2022, almost every county in the province saw 2021 yields well above the 10-year average for their county. The Production Insurance average farm yield for corn was about 200 bushels per acre, much higher than the 10‑year average of 173 bushels per acre. The Production Insurance average farm yield for soybeans was about 53 bushels per acre, which is also well above the 10‑year average of 47 bushels per acre.

The yield maps below show 2021 Ontario corn and soybean yields from farmers enrolled in Production Insurance.

How do higher yields affect program coverage?

Higher yields can lead to higher Production Insurance coverage in future years, when producers need it.

Because Production Insurance coverage is based on a producer's individual yield history, an above‑average yield raises a producer's average farm yield (AFY). The higher a producer's AFY, the higher the level of production Agricorp guarantees.

How do lower yields affect program coverage?

While many farmers had a good year, there were still some areas in the province that experienced challenges.

Farmers in these areas may have questions about how lower than average yields could reduce their AFY because the AFY reflects their yield history and is used as a benchmark for payments. To lessen the impact of extreme yields, Production Insurance has a feature in place so that unusually high and low yields are buffered to stabilize a customer's AFY.

For more information, read the Yield Buffering feature sheet.
