2024 grain and oilseed acres (maps and coverage reminders)

August 2, 2024

Thousands of Ontario farmers rely on Production Insurance each year to protect their investments. For the 2024 program year, the number of insured acres is similar to last year. 5.26 million acres are insured in 2024, with 1.57 million corn acres and 2.29 million soybean acres. Farmers can take comfort in knowing these valuable acres are covered against risks beyond their control.

How Production Insurance covers these acres

The weather has created some challenges for some farmers in different areas of the province. While some have experienced ideal planting and growing conditions, others are struggling with excessive rain, lending to difficult harvesting, poor crop emergence, and disease.

The programs Agricorp delivers are intended to help farmers offset losses caused by exactly these types of risks. Agricorp is here to help and ready to deliver.

Production Insurance is designed to cover yield reductions and production losses caused by factors beyond a farmer's control, including adverse weather, disease, pests, wildlife, or other uncontrollable natural perils.

Scenario How Production Insurance responds
Farmers who were unable to plant

Farmers in Production Insurance who were ultimately unable to plant prior to the planting deadline were eligible for unseeded acreage coverage. This coverage compensates for fixed costs and land maintenance.

Agricorp is currently processing unseeded acreage claims and expects to pay the majority of those by the end of summer.

Farmers who are struggling with excess rain and poor emergence Yield-based coverage gives farmers a guaranteed level of production. The guarantee is based on their individual historical yield and the coverage level they selected.
Wheat farmers who are struggling with adverse weather and plant diseaseWheat farmers in Production Insurance are covered for yield reductions and quality losses caused by adverse weather and plant disease. If they have quality losses, Agricorp applies a quality factor to their yield to reflect the lower prices they may receive, which increases the likelihood and size of a claim payment.

As farmers monitor their crops over the coming months, they should contact Agricorp if they notice any new or additional damage, even if they have already reported damage this season. In cases of damage, the sooner final yields are reported, the sooner Agricorp can begin working on any claims.
